People want to manicure their experience to be more like fantasy and someone is always ready to feed little lies, "white" lies, "Noble Lies," and THE Big Lie. Advertisers, of course, were quite instrumental in conditioning us for accepting this on a massive scale and in deep ways.
It takes a radical and no doubt continual purging of the desire for lies from our own lives as well as expecting and demanding it of our organizations, institutions and culture.
